I still remember the water. As heavy rains flooded Chennai city, entire neighbourhoods were submerged in brown, murky water. People were stranded on their rooftops, waiting days for rescue boats. Climate change was no longer an abstract concept — it was literally at my doorstep in Poes Garden, an upscale neighbourhood.
For years, Chennai has been prone to flooding during the monsoon season. But as climate change intensifies rainfall, these devastating floods strike more frequently yearly. And they no longer impact slums and fishing villages. Upscale neighbourhoods, celebrity homes, and IT office parks also flood, shutting down businesses for weeks.
That’s when I knew I had to change my career. I have skills in user research, product design and data analysis. But was I making a positive impact on the world? As a marketer, I was helping companies sell more stuff — perpetuating the consumer culture driving this crisis.
So I decided to pivot. I started networking and researching sustainability-related roles, clean technology and climate solutions. What I found truly surprised me…the opportunities were endless!
Companies now face pressure from customers, investors, and regulators to reduce carbon emissions dramatically. So, roles in sustainability and ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) are exploding across virtually all industries.
Even in fields not directly related to climate, I discovered how your skills can still make an impact. Teachers are educating the next generation of climate leaders. Policy experts advising governments. HR managers are implementing green workplace initiatives. Even artists and storytellers envision the sustainable world we wish to build.
The stark truth is that failing to address climate change puts all human progress at risk. So, while every job may not seem directly relevant, they now all connect to this fundamental challenge of our lifetimes.
I’m happy to report that my skills did prove transferable, and I secured an exciting new position as a sustainability program manager for a major tech firm. I now help green their operations while using my marketing background to influence more conscious consumer behaviours.
“My advice to anyone pivoting their career? Don’t wait for a climate disaster wake-up call. As climate scientist Dr Kate and Project Drawdown’s Jamie Back Alexander compellingly state, “Every job is a climate job now.”
